Canvas does not include a native AI detection feature. The platform is a submission and grading environment — not a content analysis tool. Any AI detector score you see inside Canvas comes from a third-party integration like Turnitin, Copyleaks, or GPTZero, only when your institution has purchased and enabled it. Many courses and even entire universities operate on Canvas with no AI detection at all.
This means two things: if your course doesn’t use an integrated tool, your submission won’t be automatically scanned — and if it does, the score you see comes from that third-party model, not Canvas itself.
What AI Detector Does Canvas Use When Turnitin Is Enabled?
When an institution enables Turnitin within Canvas, the AI detection is handled entirely by Turnitin’s proprietary model. This model reports an “AI Writing” percentage in the Similarity Report, visible to instructors in SpeedGrader. The underlying technology focuses primarily on GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 output patterns.
Turnitin’s Canvas AI detector has been updated multiple times since its 2023 launch, but has known gaps: limited coverage of Claude and Gemini output, and documented false positive rates on non-native English writing. Does Canvas AI Detection Catch Paraphrased AI Content?
Paraphrased AI content — text originally generated by an AI tool and then reworded by a student — is harder to detect than raw AI output. Both our tool and Turnitin’s Canvas integration can flag some paraphrased content, but neither is infallible. Heavily rewritten AI text, especially when the student adds personal examples or restructures the argument significantly, will score lower on AI probability. This is why detection scores should always be reviewed in context, not treated as binary verdicts.
Canvas AI Checker Accuracy and False Positives
Any AI detection tool will produce false positives — instances where human-written text is flagged as AI-generated. Our false positive rate is below 1% on English academic text, rising slightly for shorter texts (under 100 words) and texts with highly formulaic structure (technical reports, lab write-ups with standard methodology sections). If you receive a high AI score on text you know is human-written, consider these factors: formulaic academic writing style, heavy use of passive voice, uniformly structured paragraphs, or text that was significantly edited after initial drafting.
For the most reliable results, paste text of at least 150 words. Very short inputs produce less statistically reliable probability scores.
